“Not necessarily. Look at that smug face—ridiculous.” Faire said haughtily, openly badmouthing Peyton to Seraphina.
“Tell me about it—like a pheasant covered in phoenix feathers: useless and gaudy. Don’t end up a dud later.” Seraphina mocked.
“Looks like purebloods aren’t all that. We’re better.”
“What do you mean by that?!” Peyton flew into a rage—no one had ever spoken to her like this. “Who do you think you are, anyway?!”
“You don’t deserve to know! Look at that stupid scowl—you’re even uglier when you’re mad.” Seraphina flicked her hand dismissively. “What did you eat? Rotten bugs? You reek—nearly made me sick.”
“You’ve gone too far! I’ll make you regret this!” Peyton snarled, then ignored them.
“Sure we will.” Faire Lestrange glanced at Peyton. “Seraphina—there’ll be plenty of fun things once term starts.”
“Absolutely. Faire—should we find something to do now?” Seraphina signaled with her eyes, and Faire looked across the water.
Across the way was Evelyn and the others’ boat. Clearly, Faire remembered the Diagon Alley encounter vividly: “We’ll meet again.”
“Looks like the term’s about to get interesting.” Faire smirked.
The boats drew closer to the shore. Hagrid led the first-years to Hogwarts.
The first-years entered the castle’s main hall, which hummed with magic.
The moving, talking portraits on the walls were captivating—sometimes the people in them chatted with first-years about daily life or family, and bored ghosts would suddenly pop out to make people scream. Peeves, for example, loved playing pranks when no one was looking; last time, he dumped a stinking egg on a third-year’s head, and the smell lingered for a week.
Evelyn stared at the towering hall doors, surprised. The floating candles, ghosts, and moving staircases on the walls all fascinated her.
“Merlin’s beard—this is awesome!” Fawkes exclaimed, shaking Daniel’s shoulder. “Mate, how long d’you think this took to build?”
“No clue.” Daniel’s head spun from the shaking, but his eyes stayed on Evelyn.
“Fawkes—you’re a McLaren, for Merlin’s sake. Act like it.” Evelyn was drawn to the commotion by Daniel, and sighed.
“Evelyn—what house d’you want?” Daniel asked, his tone casual but strained. “My parents insist I get Slytherin.”
“Ravenclaw. I love books—I heard their common room has a starry ceiling and a huge library!”
“Oh… that sounds nice.” Daniel looked a little disappointed.
“Daniel—I’m gonna take you on adventures! I’m gonna challenge the school heartthrob!” Fawkes said excitedly.
“Dream on!” Faire and Seraphina emerged from the crowd.
[Nothing good ever happens when those two show up.] Yaslin thought.
Yaslin looked at Fawkes (admittedly, he was handsome, and his voice was nice—but still not as good as Daniel).
“Cut it out—you two bickering sounds like a pair of clowns. My ears are gonna flee the country.” Evelyn retorted mercilessly.
“Exactly—I’m way too cool for you two clowns.” Fawkes said smugly.
“‘Way too cool’—more like ‘way too ugly it’s shocking’.” Seraphina rolled her eyes as she spoke.
“You… you!” Fawkes’ face turned red with anger.
“‘You’ what? And you—the servant’s kid—daring to talk back to me?” Faire’s mouth ran nonstop, like a machine gun. “Don’t end up a Muggle like your father!”
Yaslin was caught in the crossfire. She was about to snap back when Evelyn pulled her back: “The professor’s here!”
A witch in a dark green robe held a sheepskin roll. Tall and thin, her gaze seemed to see through everything—she looked intimidating, her aura so stern that the first-years fell silent the moment she appeared. The hall entrance went dead quiet.
“First-years—follow me. Keep order.” The sharp voice rang out. Hagrid stepped forward: “Professor McGonagall—more first-years than usual this year.”
“Yes, thank you, Hagrid.” Professor McGonagall led the first-years into the hall.
Hogwarts’ hall ceiling looked like the night sky, with countless floating candles. Four tables stood in the hall—one for each house.
The first-years walked through the hall and lined up between the Gryffindor and Slytherin tables.
Headmaster Dumbledore was an elderly wizard with a white beard—one of Europe’s greatest wizards. He looked kind as he stepped forward to speak:
“A new school year begins, and Hogwarts welcomes a new class of first-years.
……
……
“May your year be filled with success and peace. Now—let the Sorting begin.”
The hall erupted in thunderous cheers and applause; the whole room trembled.
An extremely old, tattered, and drab hat was brought out—it was brownish-black.
