The Sorting Hat had been locked in the headmaster’s office for a year. It opened its “eyes” and began to sing:

As the Sorting Hat finished, the hall erupted in deafening applause. Evelyn faintly heard a boy at the Gryffindor table say, “That old hat’s been cooped up a year—spent the whole time writing this? Different song every year.”
分院帽一唱完，台下又响起震天动地的鼓掌声。伊芙林隐约听到格兰芬多桌的一个男生开口：“老帽子被关一年，全拿来想歌，每年都不一样。”
(It thinks up new songs every year without repeating—impressive.) Evelyn was surprised.
（每年都在想下一次唱什么，还不重复，好厉害）伊芙林吃了一惊。
Professor McGonagall unfolded the parchment, and the Sorting Ceremony began.
麦格教授打开羊皮卷，分院仪式开始了。
“Peyton Selwyn.”
“佩蒂·塞尔温。”
Peyton looked arrogant, chin held high as she sat on the stool.
佩蒂一副傲慢的样子，昂着头坐到椅子上。
“SLYTHERIN!” the Sorting Hat boomed.
“斯莱特林！”分院帽大喊一声。
Peyton wore a proud expression as she joined the Slytherin table.
佩蒂一脸自豪坐到了斯莱特林那桌。
“Camille Roger!”
“卡西米杰·罗杰！”
Camille stumbled forward—tall and thin, with wheat-colored skin and chestnut hair.
卡西米杰有些笨拙地挤出人群，她是一位高高瘦瘦、皮肤是小麦色的女生，有一头棕发。
“HUFFLEPUFF!”
“赫奇帕奇！”
The girl let out a breath, then shyly walked to the Hufflepuff table as they cheered loudly.
那个女生松了口气，慢慢吞吞的走向赫奇帕奇那桌，赫奇帕奇响起热烈的掌声。
“Victor Vance!”
“维克多·冈里斯汀！”
An overly mischievous boy bounded forward.
一个过于调皮的男生跑出来。
“GRYFFINDOR!”
“格兰芬多！”
Gryffindor’s cheers were so loud they might’ve split eardrums.
格兰芬多的掌声仿佛把人的耳膜震破。
……
……
“Faire Lestrange!”
“弗艾尔·莱斯特兰奇！”
Faire had barely sat down—before the hat even touched her hair—
弗艾尔刚坐上去，分院帽连她头发都没碰到，
“SLYTHERIN!”
“斯莱特林！”
Faire wore a “I knew it” look as she went to the Slytherin table.
弗艾尔一脸“我就知道”的样子去了斯莱特桌。
“Seraphina Delacourt!”
“塞拉菲娜·德蒙特！”
Seraphina sat up gracefully, and the hat gave the same reply: “SLYTHERIN!”
塞拉菲娜优雅地坐上去，分院帽给出了一样的答复“斯莱特林！”
Next came Evelyn.
接着轮到了伊芙林。
Professor McGonagall called, “Evelyn Greengrass.”
麦格教授喊“伊芙林·格林格拉斯。”
Evelyn sat down calmly—but the result shocked everyone: a pureblood sorted into Ravenclaw!
伊芙林轻松地坐上去，答案却让人震惊，因为一个纯血被分进了拉文克劳！
“RAVENCLAW!” the Sorting Hat shouted.
“拉文克劳！”分院帽大喊。
Evelyn was delighted—she’d gotten her desired house.
伊芙林自然是开心的，她被分进了想进的学院。
The Sorting Hat thought: (Ambitious and cunning, but her intellect is superior—better a clever genius in Ravenclaw than going astray.)
分院帽心想：（有野心，城府深，却胜在智商高，这样精明的天才去拉文克劳才不会走上歪路吧！）
Then Daniel and Fawkes were sorted into Slytherin, just as expected.
接着丹尼尔和法斯如意料般被分进了斯莱特林。
(She’s in Ravenclaw? Then I’ll visit her often!) Daniel thought, dejected.
（她去了拉文克劳吗？那以后我常去找她！）丹尼尔沮丧地想着。
Fawkes clapped Daniel’s shoulder loudly: “Where d’you think Yaslin’ll go?”
法斯克大咧咧地揽住丹尼尔的肩：“你说雅思林会分去哪？”
“No idea.”
“不知道。”
“I bet Slytherin.”
“我感觉是斯莱特林。”
“SLYTHERIN!” the hat cried. A half-blood in Slytherin was rare, but not unheard of.
“斯莱特林！”分院帽喊了一声，一个混血被分进了斯莱特林，这很稀奇，却也不是没有先例。
Yaslin’s nervous heart finally settled. She looked surprised, then awkwardly joined the Slytherin table.
雅思林忐忑的心终于放下，她有些吃惊，慢慢地去了斯莱特林那桌。
The Sorting ended, and students began their feast.
分院结束了，学生们开始用餐。
The night was young—just like their stories at Hogwarts. Everyone had their own thoughts as they returned to the dorms…
夜还长，就像他们在霍格沃茨的故事刚开始，每人都各怀心思，回到寝室……
