Cleo
Cleo
Everyone scrambled out of their seats, confusion flashing across their faces, as realization dawned on them. This was not a drill; this was a real fire.
Pushing and shoving each other, everyone rushed to the door, hurrying to get out of the building as the teacher screamed at them to stay calm. Cleo waited until everyone was out before running after them, glad that she avoided the shoves.
Following the crowd, Cleo made her way out of the building, wondering where the fire was. She could smell the smoke, and she couldn’t see the fire. Everyone piled outside and the teachers counted the students.
Cleo could now see where the fire was in the building. She could also see that the fire was spreading.
One of the teachers gasped and whispered something to the principle. Their faces became grim and fearful. Someone was missing.
Cleo looked at the other students. Most of them hadn’t noticed that there was someone was missing, but some students cast scared looks at the flaming school building, knowing there was someone inside.
Cleo knew that the firefighters wouldn’t be in time to save the student. The teachers had just called them, having no time before, when they were rushing out of the building. The fire station was at least 20 minutes away. They wouldn’t make it in time.
The teachers were whispering frantically to each other. Cleo moved closer towards them so she could hear what they were saying.
“Jacob… missing… new student…” was all Cleo could make out, but that was enough to confirm her suspicions. A student, Jacob, was still in the building.
Cleo figured that he got lost on his way out of the building, considering that he was new.
Ten minutes passed with no sign of Jacob or the firefighters. The teachers were getting nervous and nearly the entire building was on fire.
Smoke rose up into the sky, turning it gray and hazy. Everyone now knew that someone was still trapped in the building, but no one went in to find him.
Cleo knew that everyone was wondering where the firefighters were. Shouldn’t they be here by now?
Through the grim whispers of the crowd, Cleo heard a faint cry for help. She immediately whipped her head to the flaming school building and saw a face through a window on the second floor.
Cleo looked around, no one had noticed Jacob in the building.
Though she didn’t know him, Cleo knew that she had to do something. Jacob would die if no one helped him.
After a moment’s hesitation, Cleo ran for the burning building, ignoring the gasps of the students and the yelling of the teachers, demanding her to come back. No one went after her.
Cleo barreled through the big double doors of the building. She immediately choked on the smoke and pulled her shirt up to cover her nose and mouth, while simultaneously looking around for the staircase that would lead up to the second floor.
Cleo rounded a corner and took the stairs two at a time, surrounded by the stifling heat of the fire.
Getting to the second floor, Cleo turned into the first hallway. Checking in every room she passed, Cleo called out Jacob’s name, though it came out muffled through the shirt over her mouth. She knew that Jacob would be somewhere in the front side of the building because she saw him through one of the front windows.
As she neared the end of the hall, Cleo started to lose hope in finding Jacob. Maybe he moved to a different part of the building.
Cleo opened one of the last doors. The fire was burning through the wooden floors. Traveling over the desks and up the walls, peeling the once-white paint.
The heat was suffocating her. The fire burned in nearly every room she checked.
Cleo stumbled into the last room in the hallway, coughing and eyes burning from the smoke.
Rubbing her eyes, Cleo looked around the room. Desks were pushed aside from when the students scrambled out of the room. In the corner of the room, next to the window, crouched a figure.
