Recount of Year 4 Residential

In year four, I went to The British School of Guangzhou and had a brilliant time there. The thing that I like about this school is the residential trip. During this trip, a year group of students and some teachers went somewhere in China and lived there for a few days. We went to Hong Kong during our trip. Even though we only had a journey of three days and two nights, it felt like a long time because I was only eight and not used to being away from my family. But I still had a terrific time.

We were always allowed to choose who we wanted to be with for the rooms. When it was my term, I desperately shouted out my friends' names. Even though shouting was not allowed, I was lucky enough not to get into trouble. After a 12-hour journey, we arrived at the campsite, but we still had to walk a long way up to the dormitory. However, our year was more fortunate than last year's students where they had to take their luggage with them. The food there wasn't the best, and the activities weren’t the most fun, but I was pretty happy to have a new experience. The activities that I remember the most were kayaking, water fighting, mountain climbing, and rock climbing.

The water activities were what I hated the most because of a misunderstanding of the rules. Other groups were told to wear swimsuits inside their normal clothes. But whichever teacher was in charge of our group must not have done a very good job in managing this for us: we didn't have the time for changing, which made me uncomfortable because normal clothes are no good for water activities. The water fight wasn't fun either, and I got hit multiple times. In the afternoon, we went kayaking, and I was excited about it because I had done it before and was sure to achieve a great result in the race. I paddled and paddled but was overtaken by two other boats. I sped up but lost most of my energy and had to slow down and got fifth place in the end.

Mountain climbing and rock climbing were more stimulating than the water activities, and I had much more motivation for them. This type of mountain climbing was not like normal ones where climbers go up a hill or stairs but involved wearing a helmet and harness attached to a rope and climbing a steep rock face. There was even a cliff about two meters tall that we had to jump off. Because I was scared I was the last one to jump off. It wasn't, however, the scariest activity. Rock climbing has three stages, and I chose the second one. Because it was my first attempt, I initially thought I couldn't go up the rock wall. Owing to my competitive nature, and the fact I didn’t want to miss out on something all the other kids were doing, I did it in the end. Even though it was scary, I still want to try it again when I have the opportunity. Perhaps partly because of that trip, I now am set in my ways in preferring land-based activities over water activities.

These were the things that I remembered about year 4's residential trip. Even though a long period of time has passed, it is still the most profound memory of primary school because it contained excitement and courage. This trip made me understand that living for only a few days together with someone can facilitate a relationship.
