The Forks High School cafeteria was a cacophony of chatter, the scent of microwaved pasta and overcooked vegetables hanging thick in the air. Star Mengyun sat at the Cullens’ usual table, picking idly at the apple she’d brought from home. She wasn’t hungry—hadn’t been, really, since she’d figured out the truth about her hosts—but the routine of lunch was comforting.
Across from her, Edward’s fingers drummed an impatient rhythm against the table. His eyes, as always, were fixed on the door.
Alice smirked around a sip of her soda (unopened, for show). “She’s coming,” she sing-songed.
Edward didn’t reply, but his shoulders relaxed just a fraction.
Sure enough, Bella Swan shuffled into the cafeteria a moment later, her hair damp from the ever-present rain, her eyes scanning the room until they landed on their table. Her eyes met with Edward's for a moment, then she gave Star a smile, and went to sit next to Mike.
Looking at the expression on Edward's face, Star hid a smile behind her apple. There's definitely something going on between the two of them.
